Snapshot: Incredibly rude, foul-mouthed, impulsive, capricious, avoids getting attached to things out of deep-seated belief she will eventually lose them, pyromaniac, impatient, lover of magic and fire, appears to have few conventional morals but in fact quite deliberately not-Evil, haunted by the death of her twin far more than she lets on, can be stubborn and very reckless, likes to complain, providers of makeshift cremation and funerary services, non-formal, unconventional training in magic - slept with aged, properly trained wizard in exchange for tutoring on at least one occasion.
Appearance:
Iara stands at 5'9, neither particularly tall nor particularly short for a tiefling. She has a muscular build and a moderately curvy, hourglass type shape, though her clothing rarely if ever accentuates the more feminine aspects of her appearance. Like all members of her race, Iara's eyes are single-colored orbs - in her case, silver. She has dark red hair which she wears in dreads that fall just an inch or so above her shoulders and medium brown with a reddish hue to it. Her horns are ram-shaped, though not especially thick, and a darker brown than her skin, without the red undertone. The woman has a prominent scar that goes from just below her right ear to the center base of her neck. Her tail is the same color as her skin, and measures in at 4 feet long.
Iara tends to wear black, brown, and grey shades of clothing and armament - rugged, comfortable, appropriate for whatever tasks she is engaged in. She never has seen a point in trying to be decorative. Her body is well covered, and tends towards the unisex in style. She wears no jewelry or similar adornments.
Personality:
In interactions with others, Iara tends to be intentionally rude, blunt, rarely paying any attention to tact. Often, she mocks and insults those around her - this goes for both friends and foes, though her words tend to be crueler when directed at people she truly dislikes. Her sense of humor has been described more than once as bizarre - she will laugh at things others would not find particularly amusing at all, while more traditional jokes will sometimes go over her head entirely or annoy her. She also tends to laugh at pain and misfortune, both her own and that of those around her (the former being a bitter sort of laughter).
She cares little about aesthetics or beauty, in herself, others, or in her surroundings, and she doesn't often procure unnecessary belongings. That said, Iara is very possessive of the things she considers hers, and to a large degree this includes people she currently in her good graces. She may threaten her companions, temporary friends or lovers (all of her friendships and flings have, thus far, been very temporary) regularly and mock them ceaselessly, but she will rarely allow strangers to do the same. She is capricious, and often makes decisions for what seems like the most petty of reasons. In her time as a sort of mercenary adventurer, she would often approach potential jobs in this manner: no, you will not hire me to rob this old man [because I like the way he painted his house]; yes, i will kill that man for you [because his mustache offends me]. That said, she can be quite stubborn once a decision is made and is loathe to leave something she has started incomplete, even if she does complain the whole time while doing it.
Iara is comfortable being alone, but has no problem working with others - at least in the short term. Though not particularly strong, she has more experience with roughing it in difficult conditions than most wizards, and the attendant physical activity. The tiefling has an intense interest in any kind of books dealing with her kind of arcane magic, and absolutely no interest at all in those about almost any other subject - reading has always been a means to an end for her, that end very specifically being to learn magic. She is observant and has been known to overhear all kinds of interesting gossip simply by sitting silently off to the side - she is, in fact, quite a bit sneakier than most wizards and mages tend to be. hough she will sometimes approach someone she is interested in sexually quite assertively, unwanted advances toward her will often end painfully for the offending party. She considers herself a pragmatist - neither particularly optimistic nor especially fatalistically inclined.
She likes to whistle, particularly when bored or during especially awkward or inappropriate moments.
Iara has no religious feelings, no respect for any of the gods. She will occasionally mock the particularly devout, and has been known to commit acts some would consider blasphemous. That said, there is a particular line, perhaps clearly visible only to her, between the actions she is wont to take part in and those that are truly evil and destructive, and beyond this very self-defined line she will not go, regardless of what that refusal might cost her.
Background:
Iara entered this world as one in a set of twins, her brother born several minutes before her. Their mother was particularly ill-tempered, even for a Tiefling, and prone to bouts of especially wild, manic behavior. These tendencies got her killed in a vicious fight with another of their race when the twins were about five; afterwards they were raised solely by their father, whose parenting skills left something to be desired. Though he drank, fought, and gambled often, and left them to their own devices when it came to more mundane needs, their father did teach Iara and her brother how to fight, some of the history of their race, how to be tough and hold their own in the crowded, slummy neighborhoods of the city they called home.
Throughout their childhood, though sharing the kind of 'psychic' connection twins are known to have, the two tiefling children otherwise defied twin stereotypes: they did not like each other, they could not get along, they shared few friends or interests, and when forced to be together they argued and fought constantly. This did not improve much as they grew older and began to try to make their way in the world. Both found that they were drawn - fascinated, in fact - to magic, the power simple words and gestures and trinkets could evoke. Her brother, being the more impetuous of the two, plunged ahead on the path of the warlock, making an eldritch pact under the guidance of a neighborhood figure, a mean-spirited and sketchy retired adventurer of the same profession. That he had one-upped his twin so thoroughly pleased the young man, and his newfound path filled him with a new level of arrogance. Not long afterwards, Iara came upon him violently raping one of their neighbors, a human girl of thirteen. Here her capricious sense of morality and her dislike of her twin brother came to a head. She confronted him, and the two fought, far more violently than they ever had in the past. At once point her brother lunged at her with a knife, slicing her deeply from right her to base of her deck in a diagonal line - had she not shifted slightly at the last moment, the cut to her throat would likely have killed her. Realizing that her brother meant to kill her, Iara responded in kind. She was luckier, or perhaps more desperate: her own knife plunged deeply into her brother's ribcage, and after a few moments he ceased breathing.
It took Iara a couple of days to find their father, and doing so only lead to more more fighting, though this time only with words. She realized with utter certainty in that moment that she felt nothing but disgust for her father, her family, her bloodline, and decided from that moment on to have nothing more to do with them. She left the city, began to wonder about through the world. A strong aversion now kept her from following the path her brother had chosen, though it was by far the easiest way to gain access to the arcane power she'd always been drawn to. Instead, she decided to learn the magic of wizards. It was, especially at the start, a rather slow process.
She wandered, did small jobs to get by, kept her eyes open to opportunities. Every so often she would find a more experienced wizard to teach her something. The first was a kindly old man who taught her a simple Light cantrip and told her she had strong potential. The second was not so generous, but quite lecherous; they made a deal, and to her it was more than worth it - she let a moderately unattractive old man have his way with her body, and in return learned the vital basics of that which she most wanted to know. Later she would use her newly learned spells to assist her in her mercenary work, and with the new coin Iara would buy as many books of magic as she could afford, often of the 'fell off the back of a cart' variety. She spent hours and hours locked in tiny rooms in cheap, tawdry inns, studying.
Over time she grew bored of the mundane and surprisingly repetitive mercenary work that came her way...
